Use the name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate — including middle names. The calculation extracts vowels only, with proper handling of the Y-rule and accented letters (á, é, ñ, ö...).
Meet the Twelve Soul Urges
Nine core numbers (1–9) plus three Master Numbers (11, 22, 33). Each one describes a different flavour of longing — the inner hunger that shapes every choice you make.

How Soul Urge Is Calculated
Take the full birth name. Extract every vowel — A, E, I, O, U, plus Y when it acts as one. Assign each vowel its Pythagorean or Chaldean value. Add them all up. Reduce to a single digit, unless the intermediate sum is 11, 22 or 33 — those Master Numbers stay. Accented vowels (á, é, ñ, ö...) are normalised to their base letters before the calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Your Life Path Number comes from your birth date and describes the overarching journey of your life. Your Soul Urge Number comes from the vowels in your full birth name and reveals your inner motivations and deepest desires. They often feel very different — which is part of what makes numerology so illuminating.
The most common reason is how the letter Y is handled. Some calculators always treat Y as a vowel; others always treat it as a consonant. The most accurate approach (used here) applies the contextual rule — Y is a vowel when it stands between two consonants or at the end of a word after a consonant, and a consonant when it appears at the start of a word or adjacent to another vowel.
Names like Lynn seem vowel-less at first glance, but the Y rule resolves this: in Lynn, Y sits between two consonants, making it a vowel. The Soul Urge is calculated from that Y. Truly vowel-less names are extraordinarily rare in Latin-alphabet languages.
Yes — in traditional numerology the full birth name as it appears on your birth certificate is used, including all middle names. Each name contributes its vowel values to the total. Some practitioners use only the first and last name, which is why results can differ between systems.
Your birth name carries the original vibration numerologists call your soul contract. However, a legally changed name or a deeply felt chosen name (particularly for transgender individuals) does carry real energetic weight. Many practitioners calculate both and examine the relationship between them.
Yes. Soul Urge Number, Heart’s Desire Number, Motivation Number and Soul Number all refer to the same calculation: the sum of the vowels in your full birth name, reduced to a single digit or Master Number.
Yes — this is one of the most practically significant aspects of numerology. When you change your name legally and use it consistently, the new vowel sum creates a new Soul Urge vibration. Most practitioners believe the transition takes 1–3 years of consistent use before the new vibration fully integrates.
Pythagorean assigns numbers 1–9 sequentially to the alphabet. Chaldean — considered older and more esoteric — assigns values based on the vibrational frequency of each letter rather than its alphabetical position, and does not use the number 9 for any letter. Most Western calculators use Pythagorean; Chaldean is preferred by some traditional practitioners.
Master Numbers are not reduced further because they carry an amplified, more complex vibration. A Soul Urge 11 is not simply a 2 — it carries the sensitivity and partnership orientation of 2 but elevated to a higher frequency of inspiration and spiritual purpose. Master Numbers often feel like both a gift and a burden: greater potential accompanied by greater inner tension.
This is extremely common and is called a soul-expression misalignment. Your Expression Number describes who you are in the world; your Soul Urge describes who you are inside. When they diverge significantly — say, an Expression 8 (powerful, ambitious) with a Soul Urge 2 (craving intimacy and peace) — you may feel that your outer life does not reflect your inner truth. Recognising this tension is the first step to resolving it.
Traditional Western numerology was developed for Latin-alphabet names. For names in other scripts, practitioners typically transliterate the name into its Latin phonetic equivalent first, then apply the calculation. This is imperfect and is one reason why numerology is most naturally suited to names already in the Latin alphabet.
Numerology is a symbolic and interpretive system, not an empirical science. It has not been validated by controlled scientific studies. It is best understood as a framework for self-reflection — a language for exploring inner patterns and motivations. Many people find it profoundly useful as a tool for introspection, even if they do not take it literally.
